I’m sure it’s been said by many recently, “Gah, I gained weight overnight!!” I know I’ve thought and said this many times, especially this time of year. I was convinced my one day of overindulgence was the reason for the 1, 2, 3 pound weight increase I was seeing on the scale in the morning. It had to be from filling my plate with seconds, or that extra piece of pie, right?! WRONG. I’ve recently learned that overindulging for one day is not actually increasing my body fat by pounds overnight. Instead, there are many other reasons the scale looks drastically different the next morning:

✨Sodium intake went up. This leads to water retention —> scale goes up.

✨Period. Hormone fluctuations are normal during a menstrual cycle, leading to water retention —> scale goes up.

✨Late-night indulgences. This delays digestion later than usual —> scale goes up.

✨Intense workout. If this is you, I applaud you! This could cause a rise in the stress hormone, which increases water retention to aid in recovery —> scale goes up.

✨Lack of sleep. Sleep is when we recover and it helps regulate our stress hormone. Elevated stress hormones leads to increased water retention —> scale goes up.

✨Dehydration. Our bodies are meant to be hydrated. Without proper hydration, calories burn slower and breaking down fat is less effective —> scale goes up.

✨Stressed. Once again, related to our stress hormone which affects water retention —> scale goes up.

One pound of fat is equal to about 3,500 calories. So unless we are consistently eating 3,500 calories over and above our usual caloric intake, this type of weight gain does not happen overnight. So give yourself grace and enjoy the holiday gatherings. Don’t let one day of overindulging discourage you. Mondays are a great day to reset and recover and get back on-track.
